RIP DJ Mehdi

Mehdi Faveris-Essadi, known by his stage name DJ Medhi, was French-born and of Tunisian descent. He first gained ground for his underground work in France's hip hop scene, and started to really get noticed when he signed with French electro label Ed Banger Records. The young producer had collaborated with a number of big names, including MC Solarr, Daft Punk, Cassius, Carol King, and with Chromeo on his single "I Am Somebody," which you can listen to below.

Though it's still unclear exactly what hapened. . .

UPDATE, 1:20 p.m.:A source told MTV News that DJ Mehdi was celebrating his 34th birthday on his rooftop. No word on whether the accident occurred on the rooftop or the mezzanine. Mehdi's record company, Ed Banger Records, is expected to make a statement later today.
UPDATE, 11:42 a.m.:According to French site Liberation Next, the accident happened at DJ Mehdi's home, when the mezzanine collapsed and fell several meters. Three others have been hospitalized.
UPDATE, 11:30 a.m.: According to Le Monde, the PR agency Phunkster confirmed to 20 Minutes that there aren't any more details about the death of Mehdi, though it seems that he fell from a mezzanine level with some other people. Others are reporting he fell off a roof.DJ Mehdi's publicist has confirmed that the hip hop/electro producer has died at age 34, Consequence of Sound reports. The cause of death is still unknown, though initial reports are calling it an accident.

The news first started trickling out on Twitter and was thought to be a hoax. DJ Cut Killer wrote (in French), “DJ Mehdi !!! There are no words to tell you the sorrow which I feel… A friend goes from there… Rest in peace bro.” Drake and Chromeo followed, tweeting, "Damn…RIP MEHDI," and "We lost our brother. No words," respectively. According to Resident Advisor, an electronic music magazine, Paris Social Club posted the following message to their Facebook page: "Following the death of DJ Mehdi, we have made the exceptional decision to close the club tonight. An evening of silence in honor of the artist. Thank you for not commenting on this status."

Shake Wednesdays!

This Wednesday, I'll be returning for the 3rd time to Providence's very cool and hugely popular indie/electro dance night, Shake! Located at the Ruins @ the Colosseum, the music is definitely the main draw. You should expect to hear everything from Bloc Party & Phoenix to the likes of Skrillex & Deadmau5... a shit ton of remixes by some amazing artists & producers, and even some retro tracks to keep it interesting. They host a different pair of DJs every week; local acts (like myself) and also some great out of towners. Every week, three hours fly by; every-other-week Theme Nights add to the fun. The Ruins have an amazing space for this dance party, a huge outdoor smoking area w/ full bar & outside speakers, and even a bunch of old school Arcade Games! AND make sure to get some profesh photos taken by the one and only James Coletta! If you haven't checked it out yet, get you shit together.... and get there before 10 — the room fills up fast.

Annie Mac

Annie MacManus is fast becoming her generation’s definitive dance music radio DJ. In August 09 her show 'The Mash Up' was moved to the iconic 7 – 9pm slot on UK Radio 1, the most feel-good two hours on the airwaves that catches the nation off work and hyping about the weekend.

Long before her big move on Radio 1 Annie started hosting ‘Annie Mac Presents’ parties. The parties have gotten bigger, better since the inauguration four years ago in a single room at London’s famous club ‘Fabric’ with Mylo and Justice.

'Annie Mac's Mash Up', airs 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Friday nights. (thats 2pm-4pm EST for us East Coast Americans)

A popular feature of Annie Mac's Mash Up is the "Annie Mac Mini Mix", an opportunity to showcase various DJs ability to produce a five minute mix with other DJs. The Mini mix was also a feature of her previous show on a Thursday night.

She regularly DJs at clubs such as the aforementioned Fabric (London), Moles Club in Bath, Digital in Brighton and university venues such as Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and Aston University.

There is now a podcast of the Mini Mix. (though not available outside the UK)

In October 2010, Annie released a compilation album, Annie Mac Presents 2010.

Annie also presents her own fortnightly show on the video streaming website Ustream.tv via webcam from her home. During this show, Mac showcases new music (played directly from her laptop's speakers). Viewers are able to instantly message Mac and she frequently offers them chances to win tickets to a variety of gigs. Very Cool!

Artist Spotlight: San Serac

Our old friend, San Serac is doing big things these days! In an age when affordable music gear and virtual studio technology has made-common music whose depth and range of expression can be measured in mouse clicks, more credence should be lent to artists like Boston-based singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Nat Rabb (San Serac).

His own style of new-wave synth-pop mashed with electro-R&B can't help but bring Prince, Chromeo, Midnight Star, & Pet Shop Boys to mind.

He's been called “the closest thing to David Bowie the current dance scene has”.

Hailing from Somerville, he’s played in and around Boston for years, particularly at dance parties like Hearthrob in Cambridge and Pop! in Providence. Since those days, he has come a long way.

Rabb produces his own material, playing the instruments and releasing music on his own label — Frogman Jake. He has distribution deals with labels in Japan and Canada.

In addition to a successful U.S. tour with Junior Boys, Rabb has had fruitful collaborations with ex-Junior Boy Johnny Dark (Stereo Image), Michaelann Zimmerman (the Internet), and French electronic producer Para One (Slice and Soda)

His 2009 EP, 'Music Never Ends' was released on Morgan Geist's respected dance music label Environ. And in 2010 released a comprehensive 10 track album, 'No Twilight', via Frogman Jake.

No Twilight is available at most digital outlets
including this one.
